How did Anti-China worker riots in Binh duong happen?

The riots in 2014 in the South of Vietnam was triggered by a political discontent against China’s 981 oil rig placement in East Sea. However, it actually started from a labor unrest – wildcat strike – in one of Chinese invested manufacturers, then wide-spreading into waves of hundred thousand riots who burnt down 60 factories, smashing machines, equipments, furnitures, etc. in hundred of other manufacturers in the same area.

How did one manufacturer survive while others were burnt down during the riots?

  • The riots started from a labor unrest - a wildcat strike - in one of Chinese invested manufacturers;

  • While other factories were left behind by their workforces, one of the very few others were protected by their brave & loyal managers & workers;

  • It started with the bravest female HR manager who called for about 50 staff at all levels to stay in fire-fighting any time sabotagers dropping by trying to burn down the factory;

  • However, after few days they all got exhausted whereas the waves of sabotages were getting stronger;

  • The HR manager decided to send a text message asking for help from all workers;

  • After few hours, 2000 workers showed up making a human fence preventing any wave of riots attempting to enter the workplace (see comic);

  • This collective effort stopped the riots completely from trying to burn down the manufacturer;

  • They became one of the very few companies surviving the riots in the Industrial Park;

What made the victory & the rising of the manufacturer from surviving the riots?

  • As one of the very few factories stay safe & remained open for normal production right after the riots, the factory was recognised by Binh Duong Provincial People Committee & other local governmental bodies for their solidarity during the crisis;

  • As they set one of the best examples in building sound labor relations that directly impacted operational stability in Vietnam, the top leaders from from Taiwan's headquarter decided not to close down the facility, instead actually investing USD 1 billion into the new operations to prepare for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) which was promisingly being signed in 2016.

The key reason for the manufacturer' success during the riots remained the long-building workplace relationship that aligns all manpower's mindsets & decisions towards "common" goals
