This is a part of a research project that the China Programme at S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) – NanYang University, Singapore - undertook to study the Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) of Chinese investments in Southeast Asia. It aims to explore the situation of Chinese companies’ CSR in Vietnam, with the focus on the Vietnamese media and society’s impression of CSR performed by Chinese investments.
Key findings are: good practices of Chinese companies’ CSR have not been known; whereas complaints of unsatisfactory labour practices, substandard environment protection and weak governance have been widely recorded. Several companies have taken actions to respond to community demands when their violations of law and regulations were detected; however, most actions are ad-hoc and most companies do not have systematic and long-lasting initiatives to improve their CSR performance....
