What are Learning Organisations?

Learning Organisations are a group of people who are continuously & deeply learning together & applying what they learn to create what they want, and achieve what they aim for during NO VUCA, VUCA, or HIGH VUCA in a good way.

 

According to Peter Senge’s 1990 book The Fifth Discipline which brought the concept of the ‘learning organization' into the limelight, there are five disciplines central to learning organizations, namely: 

Personal Mastery - Continuously clarifying & deepening our personal visions

Model Metals - Deeply ingrained assumptions, and image generalizations that influence what we act 

Shared Visions - With visions, people excel & learn not because they are told but because they want to

Team Learning - Process of aligning & developing capacities of a team to create the results they truly desire to see

System Thinking - Comprehend & address the whole & examine the interrelationship between parts

When a company, a non-profit, a school, etc. can transform itself into a truly deep organization, it actually garners the above-mentioned five disciplines to have any knowledge ACQUIRED, TRANSFERRED & CREATED within its members, winning any competitors in any VUCA world.

What is VCOL?

VCOL - Vietnam Community of Learning Organisations - is a shared thread that brings the most influential learning organizations closer, supporting each other &  together advocating for truly deep Learning Organizations that can handle VUCA in a good way. 

As quoted in the famous words of the business theorist Arie de Geus: “The only sustainable competitive advantage is an organization's ability to learn faster than the competition", Learning organizations have been perceived as the unique advantage of engaging every single brain in the organizations to handle our VUCA world.

This is why Respect Vietnam & VCOL partners put together the Organisational Learning Model that was customized based on the previous work of like-minded thinkers by our Founder (see below). 

Our Model explains the 4 typical developing stages of a Learning Organisation, ranging from No/Poor Structure, Centralised, Decentralised to Deep learning, which are featured respectively as One Shot Action Focus, Traditional Hierarchy, Horizontal Flat & "Goal Setting and winning"

organisations.

The Model aims to guide VCOL members to open the black box of why & how deep learning organizations can influence others & drive the sustainable development of both social & economic growth in Vietnam.

Why do we need to build Learning Orgs in Vietnam?

In Vietnam, one of the biggest questions for purpose-driven, people-centric & responsible organizations has been how to transform all visions, strategies & goals into workflows, decisions & actions that make the organization from "good" to "great". Learning Organisations are expected to answer this question in a comprehensive, myth - busting yet simple & cost-effective possible way in both public & private landscapes.
