Learning Organisations

Learning Organisations is a regional pioneer catalyzing the linkage between manpower quality & trade development in Asia Pacific.

In the past decade, we have never stopped seeking concrete answers to the challenging question of how the region upgrades workforce quality while boosting business competitiveness.

One of our key answers is that many businesses operating in the region have not been building yet "LEARNING ORGANISATIONS", that can self-transform the entire organization from within, including employers & employees, towards wherever they want to go together, i.e. to survive & thrive during Covid19 or economic recession as high VUCA.

This also quotes what the world-famous business theorist Arie DeGues reconfirms "Organisations' ability to learn faster than their competitors is only sustainable competitive advantage in the future"

This also rings true for any businesses transforming towards responsible, sustainable & impact-driving organizations. A number of studies shows that the majority of businesses have been investing merely in the QUANTITY of manpower learning & development (L&D) over the QUALITY. This hardly makes businesses - the foundation of any strong economy - become more competitive, manpower - the centre of any healthy society - more productive & less vulnerable to changes.

Therefore, we brought the concept of ‘learning organization' into the limelight, taking Learning Organisation to the next level of closing strategy - execution gap where risks are foreseen, problems are deep-dived & mistakes or failures become "intelligent" lessons that make the entire organization learn from, become resilient & overperform even in high VUCA.

What is VCOL?

VCOL - Vietnam Community of Learning Organisations - is a shared thread that brings the most influential learning organizations closer, supporting each other &  together advocating for truly deep Learning Organizations that can handle VUCA in a good way.

Due to the high speed of change and the increasing complexity during HIGH VUCA such as Covid19, it no longer makes sense that only a few thinkers or doers can handle the changes. All need to contribute to workflow decisions, actions, and also to the strategic direction, to an extent never seen before.

This is why Respect Vietnam & and its partners in VCOL put together the Organisational Learning Model that was customized based on the previous work of like-minded thinkers (see below).

Our Model explains the 4 typical developing stages of a Learning Organisation, ranging from Local, Control, Open and Deep Learning which are featured respectively as Action Focus, Component Focus, Multi-Component Focus & System Focus organisations.

The Model aims to guide VCOL members to open the black box of why & how deep learning organizations can influence others and drive the sustainable development of both social & economic growth in Vietnam.

Why do we need to build Learning Orgs in Vietnam?

In Vietnam, the black box of learning organizations has not yet been fully opened or explored.

Our initial studies show that hundreds of organizations In Vietnam have been learning in a variety of ways as follows:

  • Many orgs. are not learning or not learning deeply enough

  • Many orgs. focus more on single actions than systematic ones

  • Many orgs. are either too controlled or too open to be integrated

  • Many orgs. do not accept "feedback" or "failures" while learning

  • Many orgs. are unable to align all puzzles or components as one (see below)

Therefore, the VCOL is endeavoring to answer the following questions to kickstart the process:

1.  "How deeply are organisations learning or why are they not learning?"

2. Why has the mindset of investing in people not shifted from short-term to long-term yet?

3. Why do social expectations never stop growing up even though many organizations doing their best in CSR/RSC or ESG standards?

4. How do the 4 development stages of a Learning Organisation suggest deeper insights into how sustainability can be embraced in Organizational DNA or Cultures?

5. How deep a Learning Org. should learn to make Learning &Development future-forwarding investments that create “the only sustainable competitive advantage" for organizations?
