Lean ESG - RESPECTVN's Insights at Samsung Vietnam's Synergy Workshop

On June 7, 2024, at the Internal Stakeholder Engagement Synergy Workshop 2024, Ms. Ha Dang, Founder of RespectVN, delivered a presentation titled 'DO THE RIGHT THINGS RIGHT - Understand the Organization's Internal Force to Manage Risk & Practice Sustainable ESG.' She identified three major challenges for ESG efforts:

  1. The increasing complexity and demands of ESG standards.

  2. The difficulty in evaluating social impact due to its intangible nature.

  3. The gap between learning and development (L&D) efforts and practical business practices.

Ms. Ha Dang also introduced three initiatives from Respect Vietnam to help businesses manage risks and pursue sustainable ESG:

  1. BE LEAN - Streamline and digitize ESG standards.

  2. DEEP IN - Manage risks by analyzing internal and customer feedback data.

  3. ALIGN WITH - Bridge the L&D gap with the BSC/BMC business model.



THREE MAJOR CHALLENGES FOR LEAN ESG EFFORTS


ESG (Environment – Social – Governance) has become an essential trend for global and regional supply chains, especially as Vietnam integrates more deeply into the global supply network. However, businesses aiming to meet ESG standards face significant challenges:


  1. Increasing Complexity and Demands of ESG Standards: The growing number of ESG standards and regulations has made compliance a complex challenge for businesses. The intricate details and extensive documentation often lead to confusion during interpretation and implementation. Companies are under significant pressure to comply, yet there remains uncertainty about the recognition of their ESG efforts.



Challenges in Measuring Social Efforts

Numerous 'S' initiatives within the ESG framework present significant measurement challenges, often relying on superficial assessment methods. Consequently, businesses remain uncertain about their current standing and the required level of effort. These evaluations frequently fail to address underlying causes, impeding the development of sustainable long-term solutions.


Gap Between L&D Efforts and Business Practices

Learning & Development (L&D) is a prevalent ESG initiative, yet there remains a significant disconnect between L&D efforts and ESG outcomes. Many leaders still view L&D as an expense rather than a strategic investment in achieving long-term ESG goals.

 



THREE INITIATIVES OF RESPECT VIETNAM HELP BUSINESSES MANAGE RISK AND PURSUE LEAN ESG


BE LEAN - Streamline and digitize ESG standards


We offer solutions for interpreting and digitizing international standards, national laws, and internal regulations for corporations. These standards are visually represented through infographics, emphasizing key terms and using icons to create a universal language for policymakers and implementers.


Additionally, our approach prioritizes compliance by categorizing standards into those that must or should be followed, based on whether they carry sanctions. This classification is visually depicted on infographics with red cells for “must” standards (high-priority with sanctions) and blue cells for “should” standards (lower priority).

This approach is particularly beneficial for labor-intensive industries, as it reduces training time, lowers disciplinary expenses, enhances internal assessment efficiency, and supports the development of employee-focused solutions.


DEEP IN - Manage Risks Through Classification Data of Internal & Customer Feedback


The model below illustrates that if businesses solely address risks and incidents, they are merely managing the visible “tip” of the iceberg. Instead, businesses should explore the concealed “submerged” portion of the iceberg to effectively handle crisis risks and enhance their policies.


Respect Vietnam’s “Easy Form” initiative enables businesses to delve into feedback, optimizing their management of RCCC (Risk - Conflict - Change - Crisis).




This solution enables early identification of 90% of business problems and delves into their root causes. It also identifies 70% of process errors, offering solutions based on these errors. Additionally, it pinpoints 50% of human errors, addressing both thinking errors and habits. Lastly, it establishes policies that drive continuous improvement in daily operations and promote lean ESG practices.






ALIGN WITH - Bridge the L&D gap with the BSC/BMC business model


The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) model demonstrates the direct influence of Learning and Development (L&D) on business profitability. Results from the Respect Vietnam study, conducted across 50 corporations (as shown in the figure on the right), reveal that L&D fosters skill development and provides tools to optimize processes, leading to cost reduction.


Additionally, L&D enhances productivity, resulting in greater customer satisfaction and increased sales revenue. Consequently, profits have risen. Integrating L&D efforts into the BSC framework highlights their tangible impact on business profitability.


Similarly, organizations can assess and acknowledge the impact of ideas, initiatives, and Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) from individuals and teams within the organization by employing streamlined business models such as BMC or BSC
